Privacy & data use
How we collect, use, share and protect your personal information.
Who we are
Furniture Lovers is a trading name of CATLIVES LTD, company number 15809676. Registered office: Acero, 1 Concourse Way, Sheffield, S1 2BJ.
Privacy contact: shop@furniturelovers.co.uk
Where CATLIVES LTD decides why and how personal information is used, it acts as the data controller for that information.
Information we collect
What we collect depends on how you use the site.
When you place an order
- Your name, email address, telephone number, billing address and delivery address
- The items ordered, the order value, and any delivery instructions you give
- Payment is taken by our payment providers on Shopify’s checkout. We do not receive or store your full card details
- Your name, delivery address and telephone number are passed to the supplier who makes the furniture, because they deliver it to you directly
Whoever delivers your order, your contract is with us. For anything afterwards, whether a question, a return, a fault or a complaint, contact Furniture Lovers rather than the supplier.
When you browse
- Your IP address, the pages you view, the time of the request, and information about your browser and device. This reaches our hosting provider as ordinary server logs, and our analytics provider as described under Cookies below
- Your basket is stored in your own browser, not on our servers
When you use the shopping assistant
- The messages you type, and a randomly generated conversation reference. That reference is not linked to your name or your account
- If you ask to be contacted by a person: your name, the contact detail you give, an order number if you supply one, a summary of your enquiry, and the time you agreed to be contacted
If you use an account
- Accounts are provided by Shopify on pages Shopify hosts. Signing in is by a one-time code sent to your email address, or a passkey. There is no password for this site to hold
Why we use your information, and our lawful bases
- To take and fulfil your order, and to arrange delivery. Performance of a contract
- To handle returns, faults and complaints. Contract, and legal obligation
- To keep accounting and tax records. Legal obligation
- To run and secure the website, and to answer questions through the assistant. Legitimate interests
- To measure how the site is used. See Cookies below
- To send marketing. Consent, or the soft opt-in for existing customers
Where we rely on legitimate interests, we consider whether the use is fair to you and you can object. Where we rely on consent, you can withdraw it at any time.
Who we share information with
We share personal information only where there is a genuine business or legal reason. These are the companies that receive it.
- Shopify. Our shop, checkout and customer accounts. They receive your order, contact and delivery details
- Beehive Furniture. The supplier who makes the furniture and delivers it to you. They receive your name, delivery address, telephone number and order details
- Vercel. Our hosting provider. They receive server logs containing your IP address, the pages requested and timestamps
- Klarna. Our finance provider, if you choose to apply for finance
- Google. Analytics and tag management, as described under Cookies below
- OpenAI. Generates the shopping assistant’s replies. They receive the messages you type into it
- Supabase. Stores assistant conversations against the conversation reference
- Google Workspace. If you ask to be contacted by a person, your name, contact detail, enquiry summary and consent time are recorded there
We also use a workflow service to pass messages between the systems above, and a search service that holds only our own product and policy text and no personal information.
Beyond these, we may share information with professional advisers such as accountants, insurers or legal advisers, and with regulators, law enforcement or other authorities where we are legally required to. We do not sell personal information.
Our shopping assistant
The site offers a shopping assistant that answers questions about products, delivery and returns. It is an automated system built on a third-party language model.
What you type is sent to OpenAI to generate a reply, and the conversation is stored against a randomly generated reference so the assistant can follow the thread. That reference is created fresh for each browser tab and is not connected to your name, your email address or your account.
If you ask to speak to a person, we collect the contact details you choose to give, and we ask you to confirm before anything is sent. Please do not type payment details or other sensitive personal information into the assistant.
The assistant recommends products. It does not make any decision that produces a legal effect for you or similarly significantly affects you, and there is no automated decision-making of that kind anywhere on this site.
Customer accounts
Customer accounts are provided by Shopify, on pages Shopify hosts. Your orders, delivery addresses, contact details and email preferences are held there, and you manage them there under Shopify’s own privacy notice as well as this one.
There is no password. Signing in uses a one-time code sent to your email address, or a passkey, so there is nothing for us to store and no password reset to request.
Payments and finance
Payments are processed using third-party payment services. We do not need to store complete payment-card details where the payment provider handles them.
If you choose to apply for finance, the finance provider, Klarna, will process your information under its own privacy notice and may perform identity, affordability and credit checks. Furniture Lovers does not make the lender’s credit decision.
Marketing
We may send marketing about products, offers or Furniture Lovers updates where permitted by law. You can unsubscribe at any time. Opting out of marketing will not stop essential service messages about an active order, delivery, return or complaint.
Nothing on this site is pre-ticked.
Product reviews shown on this site
Some product pages show reviews that were not written by Furniture Lovers customers. They were written by people who bought the same product from another retailer supplied by the same wholesaler, and they were collected by that retailer rather than by us. Every page that shows them says so.
What appears is the review text, a star rating, the date it was written, which version of the product the reviewer bought, and a forename or a forename and a single initial. We do not publish reviewers’ full names, contact details or photographs, and we hold nothing else about them.
If you wrote one of these reviews and would rather it did not appear here, email shop@furniturelovers.co.uk and we will remove it. You do not have to explain why, and you do not need to have bought anything from us.
The lawful basis for republishing these reviews, and confirmation from the retailer who collected them that we may do so, are being reviewed. This section will be updated with the outcome.
Cookies and similar technologies
Browsing the site as a guest sets no cookies from us. Your basket is kept in your browser’s own storage rather than in a cookie, and it stays on your device.
We use Google Tag Manager, which loads our analytics tags. Those tags set cookies to measure how the site is used, and they are set only on the basis of your consent.
When you first visit, a banner asks which categories of cookies you accept. Nothing beyond what is strictly necessary is set until you choose, and choosing to reject leaves the site fully usable. You can change or withdraw your choice at any time using the cookie settings link, and your choice is recorded so you are not asked again on every visit. You can also block or delete cookies through your browser settings, and doing so will not stop you shopping.
A cookie declaration listing each cookie by name, purpose and lifetime is being generated from a scan of this site and will be published here.
International transfers
Some of the companies named above are based outside the United Kingdom, or process personal information outside it. Where personal information is transferred outside the United Kingdom, we use an appropriate legal transfer mechanism or other safeguard where required.
How long we keep information
We keep personal information only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purpose it was collected, and to meet legal, accounting, tax, warranty, fraud-prevention and dispute-resolution requirements.
Retention periods vary by category. Transaction records may need to be kept to meet accounting or tax obligations, while marketing information may be retained until you opt out or it is no longer needed. We review retention and delete or anonymise information when it is no longer required.
Your rights
Depending on the circumstances, UK data protection law may give you rights to:
- Access personal information we hold about you
- Ask us to correct inaccurate information
- Ask us to delete information in certain circumstances
- Ask us to restrict certain processing
- Object to certain processing, including direct marketing at any time
- Receive certain information in a portable format
- Withdraw consent where we rely on consent
To make a data protection request, email shop@furniturelovers.co.uk. We may need to verify your identity before completing a request. We will respond within one month, and will tell you if we need longer because the request is complex. There is normally no charge.
Data protection complaints
You can complain to us if you are unhappy about how we have handled your personal information. Email shop@furniturelovers.co.uk and make clear that your message is a data protection complaint.
We will acknowledge a data protection complaint within 30 days, investigate it appropriately, keep you informed where needed and communicate the outcome without undue delay.
You also have the right to raise concerns with the UK Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113. We encourage you to contact us first so we have the opportunity to address your concern.
Security
The site is served only over an encrypted connection. Payment card details are handled by our payment providers and never reach our systems.
We use reasonable technical and organisational measures intended to protect personal information from unauthorised access, loss, alteration or disclosure. No internet system can be guaranteed to be completely secure.
Changes to this notice
We may update this notice when our services, technology or legal obligations change. The latest version will be published here.
