Will a Sofa Fit Through Your Door? Narrow Doorway Guide

You've found the perfect sofa. It fits your living room, the colour works with your furniture, and the price is right.

But there's one question that can be surprisingly easy to overlook:

Will the sofa actually fit through your front door?

A sofa can fit comfortably inside your living room and still be impossible to get through a narrow hallway, around a staircase or through an awkward doorway.

That's why choosing a sofa for a narrow doorway involves more than checking the sofa's overall width.

You need to understand the delivery route, the dimensions of the sofa or its individual sections, and whether it can safely be manoeuvred into position.

In this guide, we'll explain how to measure your home, what the diagonal depth rule means, why some sofas are easier to deliver than others, and what happens when your sofa arrives.

We'll also highlight Furniture Lovers sofas worth investigating if your home has restricted access.

Already measuring your living room? Use our Check if it will fit tool to compare your room dimensions with sofas in our collection.

Furniture Lovers sells the products mentioned in this guide. Product assessments are based on published information, not physical delivery tests. Measurements and access requirements should be confirmed before ordering.

Measure your home before you order

Before buying a sofa, measure the complete route from the delivery vehicle's access point to the room where the sofa will sit.

That means checking more than the front door.

You may need to navigate a hallway, turn through another doorway, climb stairs or move around a tight landing.

Every part of that route matters.

Doorways and door frames

Start by measuring the clear opening of your front door and every internal doorway the sofa must pass through.

Measure:

  • Clear width: The usable opening with the door open.
  • Clear height: The space between the floor and the lowest part of the opening.
  • Door frame: Any part of the frame that reduces the usable space.
  • Door swing: Whether the open door itself restricts movement.
  • Obstructions: Handles, radiators, shelves or nearby furniture.

Do not measure only the width of the door leaf or the nominal door size. What matters is the actual unobstructed opening available during delivery.

For example, a doorway described as 76cm wide may provide less than 76cm of usable clearance when the door, hinges and frame are taken into account.

Measure the clear opening at several points and use the smallest relevant measurement.

Hallways and tight corners

Hallways are often more challenging than doorways.

A sofa may pass through the entrance but still be too long to turn into the living room.

Measure the hallway width and identify every point where the sofa needs to change direction.

Pay particular attention to:

  • Narrow corridors.
  • 90-degree turns.
  • Doors positioned opposite walls.
  • Radiators and fitted cupboards.
  • Low ceilings or beams.
  • Furniture that cannot be moved.

Why this matters: A sofa needs enough space to rotate as well as pass through an opening.

Even when its shortest dimension is smaller than the doorway, there may not be enough room to complete the turn.

Stairs, landings and lifts

If you live in a flat, maisonette or multi-storey house, measure the stairs and landings before placing your order.

Check:

  • The narrowest staircase width.
  • Ceiling height above the stairs.
  • The size and shape of each landing.
  • Handrails and other obstructions.
  • Any tight turns between flights.
  • The dimensions of lifts, including the lift doorway.

A sofa may fit through the front door but be impossible to manoeuvre around a staircase landing.

For properties with unusually tight access, ask about the individual delivery-section dimensions before buying.

How to measure the sofa: width, height, depth and diagonal depth

When comparing sofas, you'll normally see three main dimensions.

Measurement What it means Why it matters
Width Distance from one side of the sofa to the other. Important for wall space, corridors and turning.
Height Distance from the floor to the highest point. Important when moving the sofa upright or under low ceilings.
Depth Distance from the front of the sofa to the back. Important when passing through a doorway sideways.
Diagonal depth A diagonal measurement across the sofa's side profile. Helps assess clearance when tilting or rotating the sofa.

You'll find published overall measurements on Furniture Lovers product pages, usually under the dimensions information.

However, overall measurements are not always the same as packaged dimensions or the dimensions of individual delivery sections.

Those distinctions are particularly important when access is restricted.

The diagonal depth rule explained

When researching how to get a sofa through a narrow door, you may come across advice about diagonal depth.

The principle is that a sofa can sometimes pass through an opening when tilted or rotated, even if one of its upright measurements appears too large.

However, diagonal depth is not a universal formula that guarantees a sofa will fit.

Real sofas have arms, cushions, curved backs, projecting frames and different shapes. Doorways also have thickness, and the space on either side affects whether a manoeuvre is possible.

Use diagonal depth as an additional measurement, not as a replacement for checking the full delivery route.

How to measure diagonal depth

If you can access the sofa physically, or the manufacturer provides a side-profile diagram, you can take a diagonal measurement.

  1. Look at the sofa from the side. Identify the overall shape of the back, seat and base.
  2. Measure the relevant diagonal. This may run between a rear upper point and a forward lower point of the sofa's side profile.
  3. Account for projecting parts. Arms, feet and fixed components can affect the space required.
  4. Compare with the access route. Consider doorway width and height, frame thickness and space available for rotation.
  5. Confirm the manoeuvre. Ask the retailer or delivery team whether the specific sofa can safely be moved in that orientation.

Do not assume that the diagonal is simply the mathematical diagonal of the sofa's overall height and depth. That calculation describes a rectangle, while the actual sofa profile may be very different.

Similarly, a diagonal measurement smaller than a doorway dimension does not prove that the sofa can pass through the opening.

The surrounding hallway and available turning space are just as important.

What to do if the measurements are tight

If the difference between the sofa and doorway measurements is only a few centimetres, avoid making assumptions.

Instead:

  • Recheck the narrowest clear opening.
  • Measure the entire route, including turns.
  • Ask for the packaged or sectional dimensions.
  • Confirm whether any components can be removed.
  • Check whether the sofa can safely be transported on its side.
  • Contact Furniture Lovers before ordering if access is uncertain.

Remember that upholstery can compress slightly, but you should never rely on forcing a sofa through an opening.

Doing so could damage the sofa, doorway or surrounding walls.

Why some sofas fit where others will not

Two sofas with similar assembled dimensions can have very different delivery requirements.

The difference often comes down to how the furniture is constructed and packaged.

Sofas delivered in boxed sections

Some larger sofas are delivered in multiple boxes or separate components.

This can make them easier to manoeuvre through narrow doorways and hallways than a single fully assembled sofa of similar size.

However, the number of boxes does not tell you their dimensions.

A sofa delivered in two boxes may still have one large section that cannot negotiate a tight staircase.

For example, Furniture Lovers' published product information lists the Palermo Universal Corner Sofabed as arriving in two boxes and the Artemis Universal Corner Sofabed in three.

Those box counts are useful starting points, but the dimensions of the largest package are what matter when assessing restricted access.

Before ordering: Confirm the box count and dimensions for the exact product and colour variation you want.

Universal and modular corner sofas

A universal corner sofa is designed so that its corner or chaise arrangement can be configured on either side, where the specific model allows it.

This is useful when planning your room layout.

Some corner sofas also arrive in separate sections, which may make delivery easier.

But the terms universal and modular do not mean exactly the same thing.

A universal corner sofa offers orientation flexibility. A modular sofa is made from units that can be combined or rearranged according to its design.

Neither description guarantees that the sections will pass through a particular doorway.

See our left-hand versus right-hand corner sofa guide for more help with orientation.

Removable legs and back cushions

Some sofas have removable legs, cushions or other components.

Removing approved detachable parts may reduce the space needed during delivery.

For example, removable legs can sometimes reduce the overall height, while detachable back cushions may make the sofa easier to handle.

However, not every sofa has removable components.

Fixed backs, integrated recliner mechanisms and structural sections should not be dismantled unless the manufacturer specifically permits it.

Important: We have not confirmed removable legs for every Furniture Lovers sofa featured below. Ask about the exact model rather than assuming the legs can be removed.

Sofas that suit tight access

If your home has a narrow entrance, there are several types of sofa worth investigating.

A relatively compact two-seater may be easier to position and manoeuvre than a larger three-seater.

Alternatively, a sofa delivered in separate sections may provide more seating while allowing individual pieces to be moved through the property.

The following Furniture Lovers models are useful starting points for comparison. None is guaranteed to fit a particular doorway without checking the delivery dimensions.

1. Solaya Sofa Grey 2 Seater — compact everyday seating

Solaya grey two-seater sofa from Furniture Lovers
Solaya Sofa Grey 2 Seater — View product

Best for: Buyers who want a relatively compact two-seater rather than a larger sofa.

The Solaya measures approximately 178cm wide, 97cm deep and 92cm high.

Its shorter overall width makes it worth considering where larger sofas would be difficult to position or turn.

However, its 97cm depth is still substantial, and we have not confirmed the packaged dimensions or whether its legs can be removed.

Access consideration: Ask for the largest delivery-package dimensions before choosing it for a narrow doorway.

2. Sorrento Electric Recliner Beige 2 Seater — narrower overall width

Best for: Buyers comparing narrower two-seater sofas with powered reclining.

The Sorrento measures approximately 165cm wide, 105cm deep and 100cm high.

Its overall width is smaller than the Solaya two-seater, but it is deeper and taller.

It also contains an electric reclining mechanism, which makes it particularly important to check the delivery configuration and any manufacturer's handling instructions.

Access consideration: Do not assume that a narrower recliner is easier to deliver. Confirm whether the back separates from the base and check the packaged dimensions.

3. Palermo Universal Corner Sofabed — delivered in two boxes

Best for: Buyers who need a larger sofa but want to investigate a sectional delivery configuration.

The Palermo measures approximately 250cm along its longest side, with a return of approximately 156cm.

It provides four seats and sofa-bed functionality.

Its published product information lists delivery in two boxes, which may be helpful compared with moving one fully assembled corner sofa.

However, its assembled footprint is substantial, and the dimensions of the individual boxes still need confirming.

Access consideration: Ask for both box dimensions, particularly if the delivery route includes stairs or sharp turns.

4. Artemis Universal Corner Sofabed — delivered in three boxes

Best for: Buyers who need more seating and want to compare a sofa supplied in multiple delivery sections.

The Artemis is a five-seater universal corner sofa bed with an assembled width of approximately 258cm.

Its published product information lists delivery in three boxes.

That makes it worth investigating if a fully assembled sofa of comparable size would be difficult to manoeuvre into your home.

However, three boxes do not necessarily mean three small boxes.

The largest component still needs to pass through every doorway, hallway and staircase along the delivery route.

Access consideration: Confirm all three packaged dimensions before ordering for a property with restricted access.

What happens on delivery day?

Once you've confirmed the sofa and the access route, the next step is preparing for delivery.

Furniture Lovers offers free delivery to mainland England and Wales, with no minimum spend.

For eligible in-stock furniture, the usual delivery estimate is 1–7 business days.

Delivery times can vary according to stock status, product and location.

Two-person delivery to your chosen room

For applicable furniture deliveries, a two-person team brings the furniture to your chosen room.

This means you don't normally have to carry a large sofa through the property yourself.

However, the delivery team must still be able to move the furniture through the route safely.

Room-of-choice delivery does not guarantee that a sofa can pass through a restricted doorway or staircase.

Before the team arrives:

  • Clear the route through the property.
  • Move smaller furniture and fragile items.
  • Ensure doors can open fully.
  • Make sure children and pets are safely away from the delivery route.
  • Have the intended room ready for assembly.
  • Raise any known access concerns before delivery day.

Assembly at no extra cost

Furniture Lovers provides assembly at no additional cost for applicable furniture delivered through its room-of-choice service.

This is particularly helpful for sofas supplied in separate sections.

The delivery team can assemble eligible furniture in the intended room once the components have been brought inside.

Flat-pack furniture is excluded from the assembly service and is delivered for self-assembly.

Always check the delivery and assembly arrangements for your specific order.

You can read more in the Furniture Lovers delivery FAQs.

Check if your sofa will fit

There are two separate questions to answer before buying a sofa.

  1. Will the sofa fit in the room? This involves the assembled sofa's dimensions and your available living space.
  2. Can the sofa reach the room? This involves doorways, corridors, stairs, turning space and packaged dimensions.

Both are important, but they are not the same calculation.

The Furniture Lovers Check if it will fit tool helps you compare your room measurements with sofa dimensions and narrow down suitable options.

It is a useful starting point when choosing between different sofa sizes.

However, you should still measure your delivery route separately and confirm any uncertain access measurements before ordering.

Not sure which sofa size to choose?

Use our fit checker to compare your room dimensions with sofas in the Furniture Lovers range.

Check if it will fit

If you're uncertain about a narrow doorway, awkward staircase or delivery-section dimensions, contact Furniture Lovers before purchasing.

What if your sofa doesn't fit on delivery?

If the sofa cannot be moved into your home safely, don't ask the delivery team to force it through an opening.

Forcing furniture through a doorway can damage the sofa, the property or both.

If there is an access problem, contact Furniture Lovers to discuss the next steps and the terms applicable to your order.

For most eligible online purchases, you can notify Furniture Lovers that you wish to cancel within 14 days after the day of delivery, and you normally have a further 14 days to return the goods.

For a standard change-of-mind return, you are responsible for arranging and paying for suitable return transport. Furniture Lovers does not provide a routine collection service for these returns.

If the item is faulty, damaged or incorrect, different arrangements apply: Furniture Lovers manages the return transport and covers the cost.

An unsuccessful delivery due to access restrictions may require separate assessment under the applicable terms. Do not assume that it will automatically be treated as a free return.

Always contact Furniture Lovers before arranging transport and read the returns information in our FAQs.

Frequently asked questions

How wide does a door need to be for a sofa?

There is no universal minimum doorway width that works for every sofa. It depends on the sofa's shape, packaged dimensions, removable components and the space available for manoeuvring. Measure the clear opening and compare it with the actual delivery-section dimensions.

Can a sofa go through a door on its side?

Sometimes. Certain sofas can be safely tilted or moved on their side, but this depends on their construction and the available clearance. The diagonal depth may help assess the possibility, but it does not guarantee the sofa will fit. Check the manufacturer's handling instructions and the full delivery route.

What happens if my sofa does not fit?

If the sofa cannot be delivered safely through the available access route, contact Furniture Lovers to discuss the available options and any applicable return or delivery charges. For a standard eligible change-of-mind return, customers arrange and pay for return shipping. Faulty, damaged or incorrect items are handled differently.

Do corner sofas arrive in pieces?

Many corner sofas arrive in separate sections, but the packaging varies by model. The Palermo Universal Corner Sofabed is listed as arriving in two boxes, while the Artemis Universal Corner Sofabed is listed in three. Confirm the box count and dimensions for the exact sofa before ordering.

Can removing sofa legs help with a narrow doorway?

It may help if the manufacturer has designed the legs to be removable. However, not every sofa has detachable legs, and removing structural components without approval may damage the furniture. Confirm the construction of your chosen model first.

Does Furniture Lovers bring sofas into the room?

Yes. For applicable furniture deliveries, a two-person team brings the sofa to your chosen room and assembles it at no extra cost. Flat-pack furniture is excluded from assembly. The route must still be accessible and safe.

Does the Check if it will fit tool measure doorways?

The Furniture Lovers Check if it will fit tool helps compare your room measurements with sofa dimensions. You should separately assess doorways, hallways, stairs, landings and packaged dimensions before ordering.

Find a sofa that fits your home

The right sofa needs to fit more than the space against your living room wall.

It also needs to pass through your entrance, navigate your hallway and reach the room safely.

Before ordering, remember to:

  • Measure the clear width and height of every doorway.
  • Check hallways, corners, stairs and landings.
  • Compare the sofa's assembled and packaged dimensions.
  • Ask about detachable components where relevant.
  • Confirm the box count for sectional sofas.
  • Check the room dimensions using Furniture Lovers' fit checker.
  • Contact us if any part of the delivery route is uncertain.

A few extra measurements now can help you avoid a difficult delivery later.

Start with a sofa that suits your room, then make sure it can reach it.
